Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and Uhuru Peak stands at 5,895 m. You do not need climbing skills to reach the top, but it is a serious trek at altitude. That is why we grade it 5 on the Kineo Effort Scale.
Why the Machame route
The Machame route climbs through rainforest, heath and alpine desert before the final push to the crater rim. Our trip spends seven days on the mountain, which gives your body more time to adjust to the altitude than shorter routes. The route also follows a "climb high, sleep low" pattern on several days, which helps acclimatisation.
Summit night
Summit day starts around midnight. You climb by head torch for several hours in the cold, usually reaching the crater rim around sunrise, then walk on to Uhuru Peak. The descent follows the same day. It is long and tiring, and it is the reason the training matters.
How to train
Start at least twelve weeks before you travel.
- Long walks with a daypack of 6–8 kg, building towards back-to-back days of five to seven hours.
- Climbing: hills, stairs or a treadmill on an incline. Your legs need to be used to steady uphill effort.
- General fitness: two sessions a week of cycling, swimming or running to build your aerobic base.
- Break in your boots on long walks well before the trip.
Fitness does not prevent altitude sickness, but it means you arrive with energy to spare and recover better each day.
What to pack
Your trip notes include a full kit list. The essentials are layers: a warm down jacket, insulated gloves, a hat and thermal base layers for summit night, plus waterproofs for the lower slopes. Good boots, trekking poles and a head torch with spare batteries matter more than any gadget.
The crew
Kilimanjaro climbs rely on guides, cooks and porters. We work with operators who follow the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project guidelines on fair pay, loads and equipment for crew.
Insurance
Your travel insurance must cover trekking to 6,000 m and include helicopter evacuation. Climb prices often include park rescue fees, but helicopter evacuation is usually not covered, so check this carefully before you book.
