Travel insurance for adventure trips: what to check before you book

Insurance is required on every Kineo trip. Six things to check so your policy actually covers the activity, the altitude and getting you home.

Comprehensive travel insurance is required on every Kineo trip. Many standard policies exclude the very activities our trips are built around, so it pays to read the details. Here are six things to check.

We are not insurance advisers, and this is general information. Always read your policy wording and ask the insurer if anything is unclear.

1. Your activity is covered

Look for your activity by name in the policy: open water swimming, freediving, snorkelling, trekking, cycling or kayaking. Some policies cover them only as an add-on, or only when led by a qualified guide.

2. Limits match your trip

Adventure cover often comes with limits. Check them against the trip:

  • Freediving: the maximum depth covered.
  • Trekking: the maximum altitude covered. Annapurna Base Camp is at 4,130 m and Kilimanjaro's summit at 5,895 m.
  • Cycling: whether e-bikes and road riding are included.

3. Medical treatment and evacuation

Your policy should cover emergency medical treatment abroad and evacuation to the nearest suitable hospital, including by helicopter from mountains and by boat or seaplane from remote islands. These are the costs that can be highest.

4. Repatriation

Check that the policy covers getting you home if you cannot travel as planned after an illness or injury.

5. Cancellation and curtailment

Cancellation cover protects the money you have paid if you have to cancel for a covered reason, such as illness. Curtailment covers you if you have to leave a trip early. Buy the policy as soon as you book, so cancellation cover starts straight away.

6. Pre-existing conditions

Declare any medical conditions honestly. An undeclared condition can invalidate a claim, even for something unrelated.

Before you travel

Carry your policy number and the insurer's 24-hour emergency phone number, and share them with us when we ask for your trip details. Our local partners need them if anything goes wrong on the trip.
