The Maldives is a country of about 1,200 islands spread across 26 atolls. How you sleep shapes what you see. Most of our guests choose between two styles: a liveaboard that moves each day, or an island base with day trips by boat.
Liveaboards: follow the water
A liveaboard is a boat with cabins, a dining area and a crew. You sleep on board and move between sites while you eat or rest, so you wake up next to the reef rather than an hour's boat ride away.
Liveaboards suit you if you want to:
- Dive, snorkel or swim at several sites a day across more than one atoll.
- Reach channels and outer reefs that are far from most resorts.
- Spend a week with a small group who share the same focus.
Things to weigh: cabins are compact, the boat moves in open water between atolls, and the days follow the boat's schedule. If you are prone to seasickness, choose a route through the central atolls with more sheltered water.
We list partner boats on our Liveaboards pages at the operator's own price, the same as booking direct. Some weeks are Kineo-hosted, with our coaches on board for a swim-focused trip.
Traditional dhoni cruises
A dhoni is a Maldivian wooden boat. Dhoni cruises are usually slower and more relaxed than dive liveaboards, with more time ashore on local islands, sandbanks and village visits. They suit snorkellers and swimmers who want to see everyday island life as well as the reef.
Island stays: one base, more space
Staying on an island gives you a fixed room, a house reef to swim from and more choice of how to spend each day. Our Blue Academy camps run from island bases, because coaching works best with the same calm lagoon and a reliable daily rhythm.
Island stays suit you if you want structured coaching, a bigger room, or a mix of activity and rest.
How to decide
- For coaching and technique, choose an island base.
- For variety and remote reefs, choose a liveaboard.
- For island life and gentle swimming, look at a dhoni cruise.
If you are torn, ask us. We can suggest a route, a boat or a camp that matches the season and what you want from the water.
